What is Grease?
Grease is a solid or semi-solid product, a dispersion of thickening agent in lubricating oil. Other ingredients imparting special properties such as oxidation and rust inhibitors, extreme pressure, anti-wear, and friction-reducing agents are included. The primary type of thickener used in current grease is metallic soap. These soaps include lithium, aluminum, clay, polyurea, sodium, and calcium. Lately, complex thickener-type greases are gaining popularity. They are being selected because of their high dropping points and excellent load-carrying abilities.
Characteristics of Grease to be considered for all applications:
Pumpability | Refers to the ability to be dispensed through greasing device/tools. |
Water resistance | Refers to the ability of a grease to withstand the effects of water with no change in its ability to lubricate. |
Consistency | Refers to the hardness of the semi-solid grease, categorized as NLGI 000 to NLGI 6. The greater the number, the harder the grease is physically. |
Dropping point | Refers to the temperature of a grease at which passes from a semi-solid to a liquid state, the ability to withstand the heat generated through the application. |
Oxidation stability | This is the ability of grease to resist a chemical reaction to oxygen. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Bearing lubrication is classified broadly into two categories: grease lubrication and oil lubrication. Table 1 makes a general comparison between the two.
Lubrication Application’s Consideration | Grease | Oil |
---|---|---|
Sealing system | Easy | Slightly complicated and special care required for maintenance |
Lubricating ability | Good | Excellent |
Rotation speed | Low/medium speed | Applicable at high speed as well |
Replacement of lubricant | Slightly troublesome | Easy |
Relubrication interval | Relatively longer | Short |
Need of heat removal | No cooling effect | Good (circulation is necessary) |
Regular Starts / Stops | Excellent as it stays | Less effective as oil sunk to the bottom or dried if stopped for too long |

KEEP THE MOTION WITH THE LEAST FRICTIONS
From as simple as a door hinge at home to sophisticated types of machinery bearings that moves during production, adequate lubrication will significantly reduce the friction of these moving parts. Hence the wear and tear are minimized. The key to a smooth motion of the moving parts is applying the suitable lubricant with the proper means. Our engineers at BiOG International Sdn Bhd have many success stories to share and are ready to assist at your doorsteps.
