What is Open Gear Lubricant?
Open gear lubricants are primarily utilized to reduce wear and provide shock load protection during typical operations. There are various characteristics for selecting open gear lubricants, which include suitability of the lubricant for the existing gear design, production equipment, existing application unit, and process.
Characteristics of Open Gear Lubricants
The recent designs on equipment require open gearing to transmit increasingly higher loads. Because of these considerations, an open gear lubricant must possess the following characteristics and properties:

Frequently Asked Questions
Chlorinated solvents have been used in asphaltic-type Gear Lubricant as volatile solvent thinners because they are nonflammable, evaporate quickly, and can improve pumpability. Although the chlorinated solvents performed excellently, there were concerns from an environmental and health perspective as they are potentially ozone depleting and possibly carcinogenic, leading to a ban on their use.
Asphaltic open gear lubricants are relatively inexpensive and are suitable for open gear lubrication, with constant gear speeds and operating or ambient temperatures. At high operating and ambient temperatures, they become less viscous and sticky, leading to maintenance (housekeeping) problems and higher lubricant consumption.
High ambient and operating temperatures can also cause asphalt-type open gear lubricants to oxidize easily, harden, and deposit in the root zone.
They tend to provide unsatisfactory performance at low temperatures because they are difficult to be dispensed and tend to stiffen, crack and flake, leaving gears unlubricated. They also tend to deposit in the root zone at low temperatures.
Due to the sticky nature of asphalt and bituminous oils, open gear lubricants of the asphalt type attract dust, dirt and other contaminants that can become abrasive wear particles during gear engagement.
KEEP THE MOTION WITH THE LEAST FRICTIONS
From as simple as a door hinge at home to sophisticated types of machinery bearings that moves during production, adequate lubrication will significantly reduce the friction of these moving parts. Hence the wear and tear are minimized. The key to a smooth motion of the moving parts is applying the suitable lubricant with the proper means. Our engineers at BiOG International Sdn Bhd have many success stories to share and are ready to assist at your doorsteps.
